Original Comic Board Plan Bright Evening / Paul D'espagnat / S-pania / I-beric

  

I am offering this very rare original board in Chinese ink, drawn and signed by Paul d'Espagnat / PANIA, titled "Brilliant Evening" and probably dating from the 1920s/30s. Paul d'Espagnat was one of the French illustrators of the early 20th century.

His first works appeared in 1894 in L'Imagier. He also worked for Frou-Frou, Le Pêle-Mêle, and Bon Vivant. He used various pseudonyms based on wordplay with his name, such as: S-Pania, I-Béric, and Béric. He signed his works for several publications of the Arthème Fayard editions with his name, d'Espagnat, such as La Jeunesse Illustrée (1903-35) or Les Belles Images (1904-36). For La Jeunesse Illustrée, he created in particular Boxe et Hymen in 1908. He was also the artistic director of Les Belles Images. For L'As, in 1937, he drew Le Secret de la Maison Jaune. He created several stories in Fillette, such as Les Galéjades d'Olivette de Marseille (1939-40) or Mademoiselle Risquetout (1940-41). D'Espagnat was one of the first illustrators to use speech balloons.

He was considered the French equivalent of the great George Mac Manus, creator of Little Nemo! He was also the brother of Georges d'Espagnat, a renowned painter and illustrator. I am offering for sale several original boards from the same lot, perhaps unique. Indeed, the works of Paul d'Espagnat are rarely put up for sale due to their extreme rarity!
